An upper limit on gas production from 3200 Phaethon

چکیده
Asteroid 3200 Phaethon resembles a comet in some ways, including a highly-eccentric orbit (e∼ 0.89) and a strong associated meteor shower (the Geminids). Yet this object has never been observed to exhibit any cometary activity, i.e., gas production. We observed 3200 Phaethon with the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory on two occasions, once while it was near its closest approach to Earth as it neared perihelion, and another while it was further from Earth post-perihelion. Observations of the J = 2 → 1 and J = 3 → 2 rotational transitions of 12CO, typically strong lines in comets and indicative of gas production, yielded no detection. Upper limits on the 12CO production of 1.8 × 1028 and 7.6 × 1028 molecules s−1 for Phaethon were determined on these two occasions. © 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Search for Activity in 3200 Phaethon
We present deep optical imaging of Geminid meteor stream parent 3200 Phaethon taken in search of low-level cometary activity (i.e., coma or dust trail). Although no unambiguous cometary behavior was observed, we find an upper limit on the object’s cometary mass-loss rate of Ṁlim 0:01 kg s . The corresponding active fraction (the fraction of the surface area that could consist of freely sublimat...

We present a study of planet-crossing asteroid (3200) Phaethon at three successive perihelia in 2009, 2010, and 2012, using the NASA STEREO spacecraft. Phaethon is clearly detected in 2009 and 2012, but not in 2010. In both former years, Phaethon brightened unexpectedly by ∼1 mag at large phase angles, inconsistent with the ∼1 mag of steady fading expected from a discrete, macroscopic body over...

متن کاملDeep Sub-surface Exploration of Cometary Nuclei
The surface regions of cometary nuclei are expected to be extensively modified by cosmic radiation and solar insolation. Induced state changes and associated sublimation and phase-change boundaries are expected to propagate deep into the interior. In the current exploration program a reconnaissance of the highly evolved upper meter of the cometary surface is comprehensively covered. However, th...
متن کاملA Decision between Bayesian and Frequentist Upper Limit in Analyzing Continuous Gravitational Waves
Given the sensitivity of current ground-based Gravitational Wave (GW) detectors, any continuous-wave signal we can realistically expect will be at a level or below the background noise. Hence, any data analysis of detector data will need to rely on statistical techniques to separate the signal from the noise. While with the current sensitivity of our detectors we do not expect to detect any tru...
